The Best Outdoor Portable Solar Lights
If you have read some of our other blogs you will know that we live completely off grid in terms of electricity supply but what you don’t know is how remote the house is. It’s built atop a rocky outcrop in an isolated mountain valley. The location is idyllic, of course, but with no other houses and, obviously, no street lighting (we don’t even have a street, just a track), it’s very dark at night. Additionally, as the house is perched high above the valley, there are many levels of terraces and 49 steps up from where we can park the car to the front door!
As we are reliant on our solar panels for electricity in the house, we needed a solution that gave us outdoor lighting without using our energy from our main solar panels.
We needed the best outdoor portable solar lights and we found them!
So, what’s so good about them?
The large solar panels are very effective. Our main solar array to power the house is at the rear facing south meaning that the front of the house is north facing and at the time of writing (December) does not receive any direct sunlight. That fact doesn’t deter these lights though. These lights require very little daylight and will stay on all night, depending on which mode you are using.
We have two of these lights, one fastened to a wall and the other just sitting on top of a low wall outside the front door. This is the one that we can simply pick up as we exit the house, at only 432g easily carry it to the car or the generator shed and then just sling it back on the wall when we are finished.
3 Modes of Operation
The 3 modes are:
- medium light mode without sensor
- dim light sensor mode
- motion detection mode.
We use the dim light mode because it’s easy and does what we need it to. Each light uses just a small number of LEDs until you walk past them when they switch to full brightness, and they are extremely bright! The light also travels well, easily illuminating the door from 4 metres away.
The great thing about these lights is that there isn’t any fitting required unless you want to. We basically took one out the box, sat it on the wall outside the front door and started to use it immediately.
We wanted the second to fit over a doorway and as the unit comes with a screw hole on either side, we fitted it where we wanted it in about 5 minutes.
They are made for outdoor use so you expect them to be waterproof and they don’t disappoint. Since we purchased the lights, the weather has been cold, wet and windy but there has been no decrease in functionality.
In our opinion, if you are looking for the best outdoor portable solar lights, you cannot go wrong with these. If you want to buy for yourself, there is a link below and if you have any questions, we would love to chat so please ask in the box below.
